Proceedings of the 2003 American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition

The computer applications committee sponsored a forum, FM 232 PDA Applications for the Working Industrial Hygienist

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) devices have moved beyond the appointment calendar stage. Industrial hygienists are finding ways to use them in field and office applications to save time in data entry, processing, and providing meaningful output. This roundtable discusses the move from the initial uses into applications that simplify and speed data collection and analysis. Several developing applications in the areas of hearing conservation, ergonomic assessment, ventilation device inventory, as well as safety and health inspections and auditing are highlighted. Discussion will turn to the processes involved in assessing the capabilities of the PDAs to meet our needs and tools used to move from the paper field form to the PDA.  Papers presented were:

  • Non-Linear Approaches to OEHS PDA Applications: Or, How to Teach Your PDA New Tricks- Ergo Evaluations (Terry Thedell)

  • Integration of the PDA Into IH Work Regimen (Mark Rollins)

  • Hearing Conservation Application for the PDA (Susan Swan)

  • Conversion for PDA Use in Inspections and Audits (Michael Blotzer)

PowerPoint presentations, embedded videos and Real Audio from the sessions is available at at the Computer Applications Committee site, http://www.aiha.org/Committees/html/CAC/cac-aihce02.htm.

Also, presented at a later session was paper 273, Improving the Quality and Efficiency of Self-Assessments for EHS in a Hospital With Handheld Computers. D. Malter and A. Galat.  All of these PowerPoint handouts are available at the conference proceedings page www.aiha.org/aihce02/handouts.htm.
